“My debut for Sao Paulo had actually come a few days earlier against Parana, but this particular afternoon at Mineirao stadium was remarkable for another reason. I came on as a substitute at the start of the second half, replacing none other than Toninho Cerezo – one of my great heroes who I looked up to when I began playing football in Taquaritinga, my hometown in the countryside of Sao Paulo state. Toninho represented the Selecao at two World Cups and won many titles in Brazil and Italy, so he was an inspiration to me. When I came off the bench, I took it as my big life chance – I stood out and we won.”
