FOLLOWING ON FROM the well-regarded Strands, Void and Vista are back with another elusively named Kontakt instrument in the form of Folds. The same sound design engine is employed, but this time the human voice takes centre stage, with 32 different sound sources sitting at its core. The more recognisable of these consist of male and female vocal performances, with heavily processed vocals and simple waveforms providing the rest. These are then employed in a dual-layer configuration combined with some interesting voicing, and effective modulation and effect options to deliver highly usable vocal-influenced sounds. The 300 snapshots provide a good idea of Folds’ scope, but it’s worth noting for some that you’ll need to be patient (and keep holding those keys down) to get a full sense of their evolving sound.
