We love...
We love November
When I was a child we used to tramp around the bonfire (usually built by everyone using timber offcuts and broken furniture) chanting, “Remember, remember! The Fifth of November, Gunpowder treason and plot”. As a result, I always remember that snippet of history and the date of the Gunpowder Plot – 1605. However, if you are having a bonfire this month make sure that you check for hibernating hedgehogs and other wildlife before you get the party started, and look after dogs: they really do not like fireworks. That way everyone has a good time – ideally involving sausages and sparklers.

Your wildlife month
November brings a chill to the air and misty mornings with cobwebs strung across paths by fat garden spiders. Many gardeners resume feeding birds now, but look at what natural food your garden can offer: keep seedheads in place, delay pruning roses until the hips have been taken, leave windfall apples on the ground and thickets of long grass to shelter caterpillars. If you don’t have any berrying trees, why not plant a rowan or hawthorn? Sweep your fallen leaves into borders, where they’ll rot down while giving a home to insects and grubs, which in turn are food for blackbirds who rifle through them. We often supplement birds’ diets because there’s little natural food around, but we forget it’s often us who removed it. So why not try just letting things be this autumn?
