PHILIP SAYCE
THE WOLVES ARE COMING
(Forty Below Records)
10/10
For fans of high-energy blues-rock, Philip Sayce takes some beating. His Strat’s battered appearance is testament to how strong a player he is with the ability to bend, hammer and pick with blazing fireworks through to the softest of balladserving touches. The Wolves Are Coming is a masterful album of strong songs played with passion and stunning tones. That Bitches Brew is a stomping Hendrixopener, filled with heavy riffing and huge dynamics. The swagger of Lady Love Divine has an infectious chorus and stinging solo.
Babylon Is Burning features guitar and vocal unison melodies plus great rhythmic punches. Wah guitar drives Your Love’s mid-tempo groove, party-like chorus and UniVibe solo. Chill-out comes with It’s Over Now with tasty Curtis Mayfield styled chording. With Blackbirds Fly Alone, don’t be fooled by the strummed acoustic intro, as Philip’s electric lead chops are full on for the outro.
