Over 200 long-term residents and property owners at El Portús naturist campsite in the Spanish province of Murcia have been served eviction notices on their bungalows and mobile homes, writes Theresa O’Shea.
On 9 November, residents from Spain, UK, Netherlands and elsewhere were shaken to their core when they received an eviction notice from the new owners of the campsite, a holding company called Newtown Capital S.L. The company has explained that they are simply adhering to a new law passed in 2023 which prohibits long-term rentals in camping establishments. Those affected quickly formed an Owners Association and have hired lawyers to negotiate a way forward with the new company.
In the November edition of H&E, I reported the news that El Portús was changing ownership and management after more than 40 years. Former manager-owner Aurelio Vaquero assured all concerned that the campsite was in safe hands, that the new company would undertake important investments in upgrading facilities, and that El Portús would, of course, continue to be naturist in nature.
