Millet and chickpea salad
Move over, quinoa, there is a new grain in town – or a few, actually. African grains, while technically ancient, were named as a top food trend for 2020 in a retail report earlier this year. The report specifically called out West Africa – over recent years, we’ve become increasingly aware of its indigenous superfoods such as baobab and moringa. Now, its lesser-known cereal grains of sorghum, fonio, teff and millet are coming into the Western culinary spotlight.
So what’s to love? Well, quinoa was always a bit of a tricky one, with stories that global demand for the Peruvian superfood was pricing out the locals. While some argued against this, and there have been efforts made to produce fair-trade quinoa, there’s no doubt that taking the pressure off quinoa by adding more super-grains into the mix can only be a good thing – from a planetaronly planetary and personal point of view.
