STAR LETTER
All about empathy
Your sympathetic and informative feature Wha eels Like To Have Anxiety And Depression (March/April) struck a chord with me. I suffered from both conditions for five years.
At the time, people used to tell me, ‘Just don’t think about it.’ This used to make me feel worse and didn’t do anything positive for my condition because it meant that I had even less people to talk to about it. Finally, I broke down to my doctor and he recommended I see a psychoanalyst. Like Laurie, I practise cognitive behavioural therapy, which is a huge help. I began to recognise my triggers and it was the first step to getting better. From my experience, I think it would help if those around me were more educated about what real anxiety and depression is.
