MIRACLE GRASS BRINGS A SEA CHANGE
These wondrous meadows below the surfaceof our seas are proving one of the world’s bestweapons in turning the tide on climate change.
Dubbed miracle grass, swathes of seagrass, which cover just 0.1% of the sea floor, absorbaround 18% of the oceans’ carbon every yearand turn it into oxygen.
A recent study found that Posidoniaoceanica,a Mediterranean seagrass, provides a naturalfiltering service, trapping up to 1,470 plasticwaste items per kilogram (2lb) of plant material, which then washes up on shore with the grassduring storms. More impressive still, this grass isthe world’s only flowering plant capable ofinhabiting saltwater and is thought to be theoldest known living organism on Earth, between80,000 and 200,000 years old.
