WELLBEING
THE SHAW WAY
Want to break unhealthy habits? The singer and actress tells us the secret of her success
INTERVIEW: KATE LOCKETT
"It’s only taken 38 years to realise what I need to do to look after myself,” Suzanne Shaw tells HELLO!, two years after embracing sobriety. “I’m the happiest I’ve been in one of the most uncertain times in my life.”
The singer and actress gave up alcohol at the beginning of 2020 – only to see her work vanish as the pandemic hit the entertainment world. “The industry was decimated,” she says. “My work had just gone, we had nothing.”
However, she was determined to change her life, having struggled with her mental health for two decades, and began documenting her efforts on social media, sharing her ups and downs with fans and followers.
After completely turning her life around, she has launched The Happy Health Club programme to help others, with a community of supportive members and experts focusing on three pillars – plant-based eating, sobriety and exercise. We caught up with Suzanne to find out more…
Suzanne, why did you give up drinking?
“In 2019, I hit a really big lull. I’d struggled on and off with my mental health for 20 years and I was hoping one day that I’d wake up and it’d all be gone and I wouldn’t need medication any more. The reality was, it wasn’t going away and yet I was doing nothing to help myself.
