ED SHEERAN
Awarded legal fees of over £900,000
Ed Sheeran has received £916,000 in legal fees nearly three months after winning a High Court copyright case for his 2017 hit Shape of You.
The Grammy-winning singer and his songwriting partners Steven McCutcheon and John McDaid were awarded the sum after being sued in an 11-day trial by grime artist Sami Chokri and co-author Ross O’Donoghue, who claimed the song had plagiarised their 2015 tune Oh Why.
Following the April ruling by Mr Justice Zacaroli, Ed, 31 – who in May announced he and wife Cherry had welcomed their second daughter – released a video message addressing the emotional pain that the case had caused, saying:
“I’m not a corporation. I’m a human being, I’m a father, I’m a husband, I’m a son.”
