As well as adorning our salads and sushi, seaweed is increasingly being harvested to feed our skin, too.
With an abundance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, lipids and proteins, seaweed, sea kelp, sea fennel, sea moss and marine algae are fast becoming mainstream skincare ingredients. And as a natural, renewable resource with minimal impact on the environment, their appeal is going to grow, says global trends agency WGSN.
One company already focusing on the skincare appeal of algae is Irish beauty brand Voya, which has used seaweed since it launched in 2006.
“Seaweed is full of interesting biocompounds not found anywhere else,” says co-founder Mark Walton.
