A RETURN OF THE RED CARPET AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES
A-LIST TAKES HOLLYWOOD BY STORM ON A NIGHT OF GLAMOUR AND GONGS
Angela Bassett dazzles in a floorlength silver sequinned gown by Pamella Roland, with custom-dyed platform heels by Sarah Flint and a Judith Lieber clutch bag
Golden girl: Angela takes home the trophy for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – almost 30 years after she won her first Golden Globe in 1993 for her role in What’s Love Got to Do with It
The Golden Globes returned in dazzling style as Hollywood celebrated its biggest talents with some high-octane, old-school glamour. Last year there were no stars, no red carpet and no TV broadcast, only a private ceremony amid controversy over a lack of diversity and ethical lapses.
But cut to 2023 and a host of A-listers shimmered brightly at the Beverly Hilton hotel, kicking off this year’s award season in a triumphant return to form.
As usual, eyes were as firmly fixed on the fashion as on the gongs, with gowns and suits in a rainbow of colours from metallic silvers and golds to blushing pinks, lemon yellows, vibrant reds and electric blues. And it wasn’t just the women putting on a sartorial show – the men also stepped out of the shadows to shine, with Eddie Redmayne, dressed by Harry Styles’s stylist, wearing a large black satin bloom on his Valentino tuxedo, Atlanta star Donald Glover in white satin Saint Laurent and Billy Porter in a pink velvet tuxedo gown.
SPIELBERG SWEEPS THE BOARD
The big winners of the night were Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans and the dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, while Colin Farrell and Cate Blanchett picked up the top movie acting awards.
Angela Bassett, who was named Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was awardworthy in showstopping silver Pamella Roland. British actress Lily James, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Limited Series, upped the colour ante in an outstanding vermilion Atelier Versace gown, split in the middle with a long train. Less glamorous, she revealed, was arriving stood up in a van, to avoid crushing the dress, which was the same shade of red as the swimsuit she wore while playing Pamela Anderson in Pam & Tommy, the role that earnt her a nomination.
