Explosive details
On the night of 29–30 December 1940, the Luftwaffe dropped around 100,000 bombs on London. One area hit badly was Paternoster Row, a locale associated with the publishing industry, where as many as 5 million books were destroyed. The Essay: Books for Brighter Blackouts (BBC Radio 3, Monday 5–Friday 9 May), presented by Professor Emma Smith as part of programming to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, considers how the war impacted books and publishing.
