Across conference tables in Tehran and Yalta, the Allied strategists battled to shape the post-war order
As the conflict progressed, Stalin and Churchill began to increasingly become junior partners to Roosevelt, who was funding their war efforts. The United Kingdom received $31.4 billion in aid and the Soviets $11.3 billion. US strength led to deference to Roosevelt during the first trilateral meeting – Tehran (November-December 1943) – whereas the handful of bilateral meetings between Stalin and Churchill allowed them to be “a little bit more honest”.
