How would you feel with a snail shell sticking out of your ear?

From around the 17thcentury, the hard of hearing relied on a different kind of hearing aid than the digital ones of today. Ear trumpets were made of metal, animal horn or snail shell, and worked by amplifying sounds into the narrow funnel. Beethoven and Queen Victoria both used them. They could be ornately designed, like this one, but ear trumpets were far too conspicuous for some, leading to the development of hidden hearing aids like those used today.
