PILGRIM PROTECTION

The Knights Templar was a Christian military order and one of the most feared combat forces in medieval times. The order was founded by a French knight, Hugues de Payens, on Christmas Day 1119, ostensibly to provide protection to vulnerable Christian pilgrims who were being attacked and sometimes slaughtered by bandits while travelling to Jerusalem, recently captured during the First Crusade.
