DAVID ATTENBOROUGH AND ELSA, 1961
BBC PHOTO LIBRARY
Broadcaster, naturalist and national treasure David Attenborough meets Elsa the lioness. Elsa was raised as a cub by game warden George Adamson and his wife Joy, after she was orphaned in 1956. Two years later, Elsa was successfully released back into the wild and had cubs of her own. Joy wrote a book called Born Free about her experience raising Elsa, which later inspired a film, television series and wildlife charity - making Elsa the most famous lion in the world in the process.
