LESSON 1
Stress-free shelving
Too timid to tackle shelving? Nonsense! Here, Abigail Ahern tells you how it’s done.

Copper trim Pep up your fixings with a hint of metallic – like these glossy brackets from B&Q
You’ll need:
● shelf and brackets (or a kit that contains both) ● stud finder ● correctly-sized screws (if they don’t come in the kit) ● retractable tape measure ● pencil ● spirit level ● variable speed drill plus drill bits ● wall plugs ● multi-use screwdriver
1 Firstly, figure out the type of wall you have (concrete, plaster, brick or partition). Solid walls will need a more powerful drill to make the holes, but can take heavier weights. If your walls are partition, you’ll need to locate the upright wooden studs using a stud finder and fasten the brackets to these for support.
