GATCOMBE CHAMPION
With a new championship for retrained racehorses added to its programme this year, Gatcombe’s Festival of British Eventing produced three intense days of action. Organisers had courted top riders with encouraging ground reports, knowing they might be reluctant to push horses over these undulating championship tracks on parched ground, reigning British open champion Gemma Tattersall, for one, did not defend her title with Arctic Soul. For Gatcombe is all about galloping to meet alwayselusive optimum times; a horse
with a raking stride may shoot up the leaderboard, but no one wins prize money here with the handbrake on.
