The arrival of a bin lorry is often announced by the loud, piercing sound of its back-up beeper, the clattering of wheelie bins and the satisfying crunch of bin bags being swallowed by mighty metal machinery. Without these loyal visitors to our homes, our streets would be filled with the stench of bin juice, the threat of disease and mounds of unsanitary waste.
