The starting point for Total Recall is the idea that fake memories can be implanted in a person’s brain, such as memories of an exotic holiday they never actually had. This isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds, because memory isn’t as cast iron as we think. Only a fraction of our experiences get filed away as long-term memories, and these have a tendency to distort slightly each time we remember them.
