Meet Limacina helicina, commonly known as the sea butterfly. Despite the name, these marine invertebrates are more closely related to snails than butterflies. Sea butterflies use muscular flat feet as ‘wings’ to propel themselves through the water. Their shells are made of calcium carbonate, which can be dissolved by more acidic ocean water, caused by increased atmospheric carbon dioxide.
