Author Louise Gooding has been diagnosed with ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – acondition that typically makes it difficult for someone to concentrate, makes them fidgety and seem like they have a lot of nervous energy - or a combination of those and other traits. She points out that “if you have met someone with ADHD, you have really only met one person with ADHD.” So does her diagnosis make her the ideal writer for Wonderfully Wired Brains, a book about neurotypical and neurodiverse brains? It certainly gives her insight into ADHD and an understanding that every individual’s brain is wired differently. She respects that no two neurodivergent diagnoses are the same, regardless of the label the doctor has given them.
“It tries to make sense of autism, dyspraxia, dyslexia and other forms of neurodiversity”
Wonderfully Wired Brains tries to make sense of autism, dyspraxia, dyslexia and other forms of neurodiversity, many of which have been boiled down into acronyms and abbreviations that have lost some of their meaning over the years. Gooding talks about these conditions, their bells, whistles, warts and all – acompound metaphor that someone diagnosed with a language processing disorder (LPD) might struggle to understand. The book begins with a simple introduction to our brains, their varied and layered functions and how even the cleverest of today’s neuroscientists still know as much about our brains as astronomers know the entire universe.
