Glowing beaches
In Jervis Bay, Australia, microscopic phytoplankton turn the beach into a bioluminescent dream scene. The phenomenon, known as ‘sea sparkle’, is produced by single-celled marine plankton called Noctiluca scintillans. They produce the blue glow through an internal chemical reaction in which a light-emitting compound called luciferin is oxidised by an enzyme, resulting in bioluminescence.
