Nerve break
This peripheral nerve – one outside the brain or spinal cord – has been fractured. Nerve cells are coated in protective cells called Schwann cells, made up of layers of protein and fat called myelin (brown circles). Myelin also acts as electrical insulation around the conducting nerve that transmits electrical impulses. The nerve axons (purple) act like electrical cables to send information around the body.
