1 SOLAR POWER DECK
Where walkways are normally found on a human-sailed vessel, solar panels cover the deck to convert the Sun’s energy into engine power.
2 TRIMARAN
MAS is a three-hulled boat, increasing stability in choppy waters over a double or singlehulled vessel.
3 15 METRES
MAS is about the same length as two London buses.
4 EYES ON THE SEA
The ship has radars, cameras, lights and antennae that provide a 360-degree view of its surroundings in place of a mast and sails.
5 TRAVELLING SPEED
MAS travelled up to 12 miles per hour as it crossed the Atlantic in 2022.
6 MAS VIEWPOINT
The ship’s computer uses real-time imagery from its cameras alongside radar data to determine what surrounding objects are.

7 POWER MANAGEMENT
Lithium-ion batteries store its solar power, but when MAS can’t get enough of this energy, a backup diesel generator kicks in automatically.
8 COURSE CHANGE
When the data input shows obstacles in the boat’s planned path, the GPS system reprograms its route.
