How do people walk over hot coals?

Firewalking is possible thanks to the low thermal capacity and conductivity of burning coals and the performer’s quick steps. Burning wood has a low heat capacity compared to the water that makes up our bodies, so although firewalkers step on coals at a sizzling 550 degrees Celsius, the amount of thermal energy the coals hold is small. Wood and ash are also excellent heat insulators. In the split second during which an experienced firewalker’s feet are in contact with the coals, the amount of heat energy absorbed by the skin isn’t large enough to cause serious damage.
