Most apps only run when you click them in the Dock or Applications folder, but some apps automatically start when you log into your Mac. They may appear on the screen after you log in, but they may not and they could run silently in the background in order to perform tasks or provide services.
Sometimes it is useful to have an app start when you log in. However, everything that loads at login slows down the Mac a little because they need time to load and run. They also steal a bit of memory, which leaves less for working with other apps. Here is how to manage both obvious and hidden login items.
