If we had a pound for every time someone lost a file and didn’t have a backup, we would be rich. Well, maybe not rich, but it is surprising how many people do not back up important files on their computer. Why not? After all, it is so easy with Time Machine. Plug in an external USB drive and it just works. Except when it doesn’t.
Problems with Time Machine backups are rare, but when you are working with external drives manufactured by third-parties, anything can happen. USB drives often use old hard disk technology, they may have been used on other computers, and may develop errors. Most of the time it is not Apple’s fault, it is the drive.
