30 BEST MONTEREY SECRETS
A handy roundup of new macOS features that you might have missed
Now that the dust has settled on the big macOS Monterey update and you have gotten into the flow of exploiting the epic new features, it is time to start exploring the numerous other, minor features that you might have missed. We’re talking about the stuff brushed over in the keynote and release notes – the little enhancements that are easily overlooked but could help improve your productivityand day-to-day use of your Mac. If you are using an Apple silicon M1 Mac, specifically a MacBook, then there are more great features to explore, such as AirPlay to Mac (stream content from any other Apple device), and Low Power Mode (go to System Preferences>Battery to turn it on). So without further ado, let’s start exploring the super-geeky, lesserknown features of macOS Monterey that you have probably missed.
01 TEST YOUR WI-FI
If your internet connection seems dodgy or you need to relay the strength of your signal, then you can do so within macOS Monterey by using the Terminal app. Open a new Terminal window and type networkQuality into the command prompt. After a few seconds you’ll be shown upload/ download speeds, as well as a few other stats that may be useful.
02 CHANGE CURSOR COLOUR
Bored of your usual black and white pointer? Why not switch it up to pretty much any colour combination you can imagine? Head to System Preferences> Accessibility>Display and click on the ‘Pointer’ tab. Now, click on the ‘Pointer outline colour’ and ‘Pointer fill colour’ options and then use the colour wheel to pick your shades.
03 PROTECT MAIL ACTIVITY
There is a new feature in the Mail app that prevents senders from using remote content to learn information about you, such as your iPhone address, how many times you viewed the email and anyone you forwarded it to. Go to Mail>Preferences>Privacy and tick the ‘Protect Mail Activity’ option to prevent data being collected and shared without your permission.
