1 THE STORY DECIDES
When designing a character, it isn’t really me who chooses the look, it’s the story and the worldbuilding that determines it. And even when I write the story, I keep that rule and logic in mind.
2 THINK ABOUT THE PROJECT
Are you creating for a book, game or film? Will someone have to sculpt it? Or animate it frame-by-frame? What’s the project’s budget? This determines the complexity and style of the design that you ultimately put in place.
3 WHAT DO YOU PUT IN THE MOOD BOARD?
It’s important to mostly use photos, because a drawing is a reference already filtered by another artist. I recommend Pinterest to find unexpected things and Wikipedia for precise cultural references.
