Over in the US, Elvira celebrated her 40th year in the entertainment industry late last year. Pneumatically portrayed by the lovely Cassandra Peterson, Elvira first hit the US airwaves in late 1981, fronting (and what a front!) a latenight horror movie show on a local Los Angeles cable TV station at weekends. Movie Macabre quickly started to pull in viewers, partly due to the classic B-movies they screened, but mainly due to Elvira’s campy self-deprecating wit coupled with her vampy low-cut gravity-defying dresses.

Elvira’s popularity grew in the US during the 80s, to the point where she starred in her debut comedy-horror film Elvira: Mistress of the Dark in 1988. And this film is mainly why Elvira first really became known in the UK too.
