Hi Allan and Yannie,
The question from Simon Ley in your letters column in
Infinity
issue #78, intrigued me. He wanted to know the title of a short TV film about a time-slip that he said aired early in the 1990s which has been a ‘long-standing frustration’ to him. The mentions of ‘time-slip’ and the ‘carving of names in a tree’ reminded me of not one but a couple of possibilities, but alas nothing that matches most of his description.
However, I’d like to go through them, for point of interest, even if they don’t match exactly what he requests. (You never know it might spur the actual answer from someone else!) For example, the time-slip and a man and a woman (or mistress?) at a hotel made me think of the John Wyndham film, based on his short story Random Quest, starring Tom Bell and Joan Collins.
This was filmed in 1971, under the title change of Quest For Love, but it was more of a parallel worlds story. However, it was re-made as a serial (not a movie) on BBC Four later - not in 1990s, but in 2006! In this one, with the title now sensibly reverting to Random Quest, Samuel West stars, and a lab explosion sends him into some parallel universe.
But I wasn’t going to give up my search! The ‘carving of names in a tree’ near the end of a movie definitely rang some bells for me, as I’m fairly certain in the romantic Christopher Reeve/ Jane Seymour movie Somewhere In Time this happened (?). I thought I was nearer the mark with this and it was 1990s, but it was way back in 1980. Though the plot doesn’t connect really at all with Simon’s details in my understanding.
