As another year hurtles to an end, we approach the inevitable point at which soothsayers in newspapers and on websites will deliver their political predictions for 2018. We’ll be given a sneak preview of election results from around the globe, spoilers about the fate of the UK’s party leaders, and early warnings of whether Donald Trump is likely to face impeachment. All of which begs the obvious question: why does anyone bother with this stuff anymore? In particular, election forecasts now look like a complete and utter waste of time, given that we’ve had a succession of votes both in Britain and abroad that ‘experts’ and ‘insiders’ have failed to correctly predict even on polling day itself, let alone months in advance. Those misreadings have happened far too regularly for them to be just bad luck.
