Planning permission
The news that permission has been granted for the demolition of the old McLaren Hotel and the creation of a new hotel will receive a mixed reception this week. It is too big, it does not blend in, it is not suitable – these are just some of the reasons given by those who have firmly opposed the proposed development over the past few years. Supporters, who have been the silent minority so far, will welcome the additional provision of island accommodation and the regeneration of the Brodick seafront and some will even welcome the competition for current accommodation providers. Whatever your view, the one thing that we can all agree on is delight that this eyesore which has been allowed to blemish the centre of Brodick will soon be no more.
And the pertinent question we need to be asking ourselves is: have any lessons been learned? Why was the site allowed to fall into such a state of disrepair and neglect and have such a negative visual impact on the surrounding area? The carbuncle in such a prominent position was allowed to fester for an intolerable amount of time and, hopefully, any future proposals and planning considerations, will take this into account
