QUEERING PETERBOROUGH
WHEN PERFORMANCE ARTIST SCOTTEE FIRST THOUGHT OF SETTING UP A TEMPORARY QUEER COMMUNE IN PETERBOROUGH — WITH THE AIM OF ENCOURAGING INTERGENERATIONAL CONTACT IN A SAFE, CREATIVE SPACE — HE KNEW IT’D BE A TOUGH NUT TO CRACK. BUT ITS IMPACT WAS GREATER THAN EXPECTED
WORDS: MICHAEL SEGALOV
When you think of Peterborough, a city in the East of England with a population of 180,000, the first word that jumps into your mind probably isn’t “queer.”
There might be a weekly gay-comestudent night at Radius, a bar in the city centre, but a weekly booze-up does not an LGBT+ hub make. In fact, with some of the highest levels of online homophobia being fired out from keyboards in the Cambridgeshire city, it could be that it’s far from welcoming for those who identify as queer.
“So, what better place to set up a temporary queer commune?” thought artist-come-activist Scottee.
