Hello Bake & Decorate friends! I hope you’ve had a good start to the year and kept cosy inside baking and cake making. I don’t know about you, but I’m quite glad to see the back of January! I had a go at Veganuary and dry January and, although it was good for the waistline and my energy levels, it isn’t so much fun, especially with the grey and wet weather!

For our February issue we’re going all out for chocolate and Valentine’s Day – great reasons for baking I hope you’ll agree. I always like to do a special dinner at home on Valentine’s Day that I end with some sort of delicious cake or chocolate treat, so if you’re planning on treating a special friend, perhaps you’ll give my recipes a go.

First up, I’ve given you a pretty chocolate heart cake, made simply by using a round tin and cutting two humps from the cake to create a heart shape, so you don’t need to buy a specific tin for this one. I have a video to show how to do this on my Youtube channel and my Instagram if you’d like to have a look. It’s really prettily decorated in a mix of shades, and any piping nozzles you have will work to give the cake different textures and patterns.
Next up, I’ve included my red velvet cupcakes. I LOVE this recipe – it actually originated in my bakery, Fancy Nancy, many moons ago. We used to make thousands for Harvey Nichols – it’s a real winner and red velvet is popular for Valentine’s Day. Made with a delicate, velvety chocolate and vanilla sponge, tinted a deep red shade topped off with luscious cream cheese frosting, they are to die for! They aren’t just for Valentine’s Day either; they are a classic, so I hope you’ll add this to your baking recipe file and make them all year round.
I hope you’ll enjoy all the chocolatiness in this issue and I look forward to seeing you in March. Do get in touch if you have any baking related questions or any photos of your bakes to share.
