PROJECT OF THE MONTH
Glazed extension
Bureau de Change Architects
This dated Victorian terrace has been given a new lease of life, thanks to a carefully planned, statement glass rear extension and refurbishment by Bureau de Change Architects. Planning consent hinged on the property being at a 45° angle to surrounding houses, so rather than a standard box into the back garden, the designers have created an unconventional arrangement of interlocking glazed walls. This maximises the internal space and is a great way to add light and interest to an extension project.
The structure is built using a steel frame, in contrast with the original London Stock brick covering the rest of the house. Instead of a traditional roof covering with skylights, the tops of each glazed rectangle are another glass pane, so that light pours into the house from every angle. Inside is a fairly neutral scheme, with white walls and ceilings, and a concrete floor. This follows through into the culinary zone, where a bold kitchen island has an accent curved edge with a stone and concrete look.
