SOMEHOW, in today’s world of videogames, strategy games seem to have slipped deeply out of fashion. It’s possible that last year’s arrival of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, along with the hype surrounding Cyberpunk 2077, sucked all the available oxygen out of our capacity to get excited about new game releases, leaving no fuel to power any anticipation of less-fancied games – and that seemed to be especially true if they belonged to the apparently out-of-fashion strategy genre.
As a result, some mighty fine strategy games were released in 2020 and already in 2021, but barely generated the tiniest ripples on the vast, oceanic surface of the games industry. That, in our opinion, is a travesty which deserves to be redressed. So, here are six recently released strategy games which may have failed to set the world alight in terms of sales, but which will all delight true connoisseurs of the genre. They might not all be perceived as “strategy games” in the conventional sense but one thing is for sure: they all demand a highly strategic approach to their gameplay.
