“I don’t want to change a thing when it’s magic,” Robert Forster and Grant McLennan sang on Magic In Here, the opener to their first album in a dozen years, 2000’s The Friends Of Rachel Worth. Things had changed: former bandmates were missing, replaced by members of Quasi and Sleater Kinney. But the duo’s distinctive songwriting styles still merged as if they’d never stopped collaborating, as on 2003’s Bright Yellow Bright Orange and 2005’s Oceans Apart, their last album before McLennan’s death.
Finally on vinyl, all three albums offer fresh opportunities to revel in, for example, Forster’s charming Surfing Magazines or McLennan’s gentle Mrs Morgan. Welcome as their arrival is, fans will also want Nachtmix 99, an LP of an acoustic German radio session which trawls their catalogue – together and apart – and showcases an especially delicate Clouds and jaunty Easy Come Easy Go, led by Forster’s piano.
