At the forefront of the briefly hip New Acoustic movement of the 00s, Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian were closer to Crowded House’s melancholy harmonies than Travis and Coldplay. The duo’s intertwining and subtly shuffling structures gave much of their 2001 debut a groove to avoid songs like the keening Emergency 72 from becoming too earnest. Copyright issues frustratingly mean that their excellent batch of B-sides (unavailable on streaming, too) are still missing, but there are charming demos for every album track on the bonus disc.
