We’ve another cracking issue for
you this month! Starting with
the news (page 6), the state of
the roads is under scrutiny at
last and most councils claim it is at the top of
their to-do list – if they can find the money!
The Classic Truck Show at Malvern has been
hailed a success, with regulars saying it has
improved under new ownership.
We review two books that are hum-dingers
– British Lorries in the ’70s by Peter Davies
and High Wide and Heavy by David Lee
(page 12), while starting on page 14, we talk
to a family running a transport company
dedicated to ERF. Turners of Much Hoole
runs a fleet of 10 of Sandbach’s finest, each
immaculate as they leave their yard.
Our Model Profile this issue focuses on
Renault’s flagship – the Magnum. Production
of this distinctive truck is coming to the end,
so Classic Truck thought it time to shine the
spotlight on what has been an iconic truck
and one that has led the way as far as in-cab
space in concerned. It was one of the first to
adopt the big square box shape that gave
drivers so much more room than other cabs
offered early on.
Our Classic Route covers what is known as
the ‘Ghost Road’ – the A74 Carlisle to
Larkhall route. It was plagued with problems
and was eventually bypassed, but much of it
still remains. So we took the bull by the horns
and drove the route.
Scania’s T-cab is a truck that remains at the
top of many a driver’s wish-list, even though
production ceased in 2005 (page 36).
Operators wanting a truck that stands out
from the crowd still seek the T-cab out and
are willing to put up with having to use shorter
trailers length limitations dictate in the UK.
We've superb shots of trucks going about
their business in the 1980s and 1990s on
pages 38-40, courtesy of Peter Davies, while
our centre spread (page 42-43) is a stunning
publicity shot of A Leech & Sons' Foden 3365
drawbar outfit hay truck.
