Why you need an Authenticator app
Don’t wait for 2FA codes to arrive by text message or email. Robert Irvine explains how to generate them quickly and securely on your phone – and reveals the best free apps
Authenticator apps use two-factor authentication (2FA) to add a second layer of security to your online accounts. They generate time-based one-time passcodes (TOTPs) you use in addition to your email address (or username) and password, to ensure only you can access your accounts.
Here, we reveal the main reasons to use an authenticator app, and the best free options to choose from.
Safer than other 2FA methods
Using an authenticator app is much faster and more secure than 2FA codes delivered by SMS. Not only do you have to wait for those text messages to arrive, but they’re sent unencrypted over your mobile network. It’s also safer than receiving codes by email, which can be seen by anyone who gains access to your inbox – including on devices where you’ve forgotten to sign out.
Authenticator apps generate six-digit TOTPs directly on your phone, which means they work even when you’re offline. The codes are updated every 30 seconds, and are never repeated, making them virtually impossible for hackers to intercept.
Protect against phone theft
Another security benefit to authenticator apps is that they protect you against phone loss and theft. If your handset is lost or stolen, you won’t be able to log in to accounts that use SMS verification codes until you get a replacement device and a SIM card with the same number.
