Many of Canon’s RF-mount prime and zoom lenses for its full-frame mirrorless cameras are big, weighty affairs but this 35mm is diminutive and lightweight. It’s ideal as a street lens for carrying around all day long and shooting unobtrusively, especially when mounted on a svelte body like the EOS RP. Indeed, the first-generation EOS R and RP bucked the mirrorless trend by lacking in-body image stabilisation. That’s no problem when using this lens, as it boasts a 5-stop image stabiliser.
It’s actually a ‘hybrid’ image stabiliser, which corrects for x-y shift as well as the usual angular vibration, making it more effective for shooting extreme close-ups. Like the Tamron, this Canon has a particularly short minimum focus distance, delivering 0.5x macro magnification.
