As dawn broke across the UK on Friday 24 June, it was clear that the UK was on its way out of the EU, with 17,410,742 (51.9%) casting their vote to Leave. And as politicians from both sides of the divisive debate begin the difficult work of trying to figure out what a post-Brexit UK will look like, lesbians and bi women are among those worrying what impact the decision will have on them. After all, many of the rights and freedoms we enjoy came from the EU. But is equalities legislation really at risk?
Adam Lake, director of Out And Proud – an LGBT organisation that campaigned for Leave – thinks that suggestion is nonsense. “The vast majority of equality legislation in this country comes from our UK parliament and so, despite what many on the remain side implied, these protections and freedoms are secure,” he told us.
