As a trans woman, I read with interest the feature What It Feels Like For A Girl (July). I can identify with Freiya Benson regarding people questioning my identity as a woman. The question of “What is a woman” differs from woman to woman. Perhaps lesbians, biological women, bisexual women and trans women view and answer that question differently. Whatever lifestyle a woman lives and how they view and answer the question, we all come under the same umbrella of sisterhood.

For myself, being a woman means that my inner self is free to live the life I have always wanted to live, a sense of belonging, being feminine, a part of the sisterhood and being dressed in feminine clothing and styles.

There will probably be biological women who disagree and some think that trans women have no part in female society. They are entitled to their opinions and trans women, myself included, have over the years had to overcome ridicule.

It would be very interesting to know what readers of DIVA thought about trans women.
