Time has a funny way of playing tricks on us. With the current slate of queer-friendly programmes on television, and mainstream representation on cinema screens, you might be forgiven for believing that we were always part of a positive narrative. Yet it’s only in the last three decades that our stories have become part of the bigger, moving picture.
Even then, we would be depicted as salacious, or used as a plot device to titillate a straight audience or generate headlines. The “irst lesbian kiss on commercial [US] television” in 1991’s L.A. Law episode, He’s A Crowd, anyone? Three years later, on UK Channel 4 soap opera Brookside, the characters of Beth Jordache and Margaret Clemence kissed and it felt like we skipped a groove on a record that had been stuck for too long.
