Hello faithful reader.
I come from a family of hoarders. My sister recently opened a cupboard to reveal 12 turkey platters, 20 pencil cases and a thousand packets of sugar from across the world. And I have to fight that urge. Must not collect! I’ve only ever allowed two things to get through my defences. Pantone mugs. And Doctor Who Magazine.
I can remember Issue 1 arriving, out of the blue, no warning, in Sketty Park newsagent’s. An entire comic full of my favourite thing. And better still, back in those days, distribution was patchy. Because a collector doesn’t just love the prize, we love the hunt. (That’s why I never understand completists who complain about variant covers. This is what we love, surely?!) So the hunt across Swansea covering three vital shops over two miles apart became part of my life. “Every Thursday” said the cover. Bah! The true collector knew that some shops, on some weeks, if the wind was in the right direction, would stock it on a Wednesday. Oh the victories of those days! I can remember my first kiss, the day I got 99% in an exam, and when Issue 26 arrived on the 2nd of April, not the 3rd.
