Three new novels are available now from BBC Books, which take the Doctor and Bill on untelevised adventures…

■ Diamond Dogs by Mike Tucker, The Shining Man by Cavan Scott, Plague City by Jonathan Morris (featuring the Twelfth Doctor) RRP £6.99 each

Here’s a confession – I miss the Target Doctor Who novelisations. My heart just sinks when I’ll occasionally see a fan-made cover for Doctor Who and the Rose online and vainly long to own a dog-eared copy of my very own. As a Doctor Who fan growing up in the 1990 on a trickle of VHS releases and limited pocket money – I never did succeed in scraping together that £19.99 for the Planet of the Spiders double-pack – those paperback books were a godsend. They were affordable, in seemingly endless supply and faithfully documented, improved upon and occasionally even made apology for the TV show’s highs and lows.

Today, BBC Books’ standalone novels are doubtless products of enthusiasm and dedication, but have to be content to slot into what nooks the parent show allows. Whether adding nuance to the breathless storytelling that 45 minutes of airtime demands, or ticking off possibilities that the television show hasn’t got around to, it’s a modest niche, but one that has kept the books relevant.
