Jack Lovell was the unsung monster-maker of 1960s Doctor Who. He never received an on-screen credit – much to his annoyance – and was only rarely invited to the studio to see his work in front of the cameras. He did, however, make a significant contribution to the series in the second half of the decade.
“One of the first things we made for Doctor Who were the Fungoids – giant mushrooms that could destroy a Dalek,” said Jack, recalling the 1965 story The Chase. “We also made the Mire Beasts for that story, which were based on an octopus. We never really got detailed design drawings – it was mainly a matter of ‘Jack, we need a monster – what can you do?’ It was all very last minute.”
